CIRT Co-Founder Dr. Jenna Jambeck has collaborated with other researchers to produce the first global analysis of all mass-produced plastics ever manufactured. Before this report, little information regarding the end-of-life of plastic products was available. To obtain a cradle to grave report, data on production, use, and end-of-life management of polymer resins, synthetic fibers, and additives was analyzed. It was estimated that 8300 million metric tons of plastics have been produced to date. Approximately 9% of which have been recycled, 12% have been incinerated, and 79% have accumulated in landfills or the natural environment.
