Climate Change and Marine Plastic

CIRT Co-Founder Dr. Jenna Jambeck has co-authored an article that draws a link between climate change and marine plastic pollution. The article, from the February 2022 issue of Science of the Total Environment, pushes back on the prevailing narrative that climate change and marine debris are competitors for scientific and media attention and funding. Instead, the article suggests that climate change and marine debris are synergistic stressors to ocean ecosystems and should be understood as two contributors to the same system. Specifically, plastic contributes to Greenhouse Gas emissions throughout its life cycle, more extreme weather associated with climate change increases the dispersion of ocean plastics, and vulnerable ecosystems face compound threats from climate change and marine plastics.
