Communities have a local approach to solid waste management (SWM) and recycling. Many rely on traditional outreach and education campaigns to increase awareness about how and why to recycle. The recycling rate in the US has not risen above 34%, however, there is still significant contamination in the recycling stream. Therefore, the programs are only moderately successful, yet remain expensive, time-consuming and cumbersome.
Market forces are at play.
In 2017, China ended the import of the world’s waste, forcing countries like the US to handle their less valuable recyclables domestically. Prior to this, the US shipped 693 million tons of plastic waste to China for processing and recycling. For perspective, this is the equivalent weight of 1,898 Empire State Buildings. Western economies have historically shipped recyclables and plastic waste to developing economies, who struggle to handle their own waste.
